American Mars lander explodes on descent killing 22

3/26/1979

The first American attempt to land on Mars and set up a permanent outpost ended in disaster this morning as the lander carrying 22 people exploded shortly after entering the Martian atmosphere. While the Soviet landing disaster earlier this month was expected since the Soviets accept much larger risks, the American disaster came as a shock to Americans who thought they would now beat the Russians to Mars. General Secretary of the Soviet Union Leonid Brezhnev offered his condolences publically to the American people. According to our Moscow source his private reaction was very different. Upon hearing the tragic news he reportedly held a drunken party with drugs and hookers to celebrate the crash.
