Mercury landing ends in near disaster

2/20/1997

Last night's first human landing on Mercury's north pole almost ended in disaster when a fire broke out on board the lander during descent. 11 of the 120 people on board did die in the incident, but that is statistically still a successful landing says mission control. This is the first in a series of planned Mercury missions to mine the planet. The dead will as usually be recycled as food for their fellow astronauts.
